LaGaurdia Airport shut down late Thursday evening after a transformer in the Queens Con Edison facility exploded. The explosion occurred shortly after 21:00 (local time).
City Council Speaker Corey Johnson said that LaGuardia Airport is “temporarily closed due to a power outage resulting from the Con Edison explosion.” At the time of writing, it is unclear as to when LaGuardia will reopen. It is unclear if there are any injuries or if there has been any significant damage.
“Reports: Investigating a transformer explosion at Astoria East & North Queens Con Ed power plant. Please avoid 20th Ave & 31 st. Please Avoid the Area,” NYPD tweeted.
Another tweet from the department reads, “ADVISORY: The lights you have seen throughout the city appear to have been from a transformer explosion at a Con Ed facility in Queens. The fire is under control, will update as more info becomes available. Follow @fdny, @NYPD114pct and @conedison.”
NYPD reports that a fire caused by the explosion is under control.
