Dubai-based low-cost carrier flydubai signed a $27 billion with Chicago-based Boeing for 225 Boeing 737 MAX aircraft on Wednesday at the Dubai Airshow, where flydubai is based. The agreement is for 175 committed aircraft plus purchase rights for 50 more.
The deal is the largest single-jet order ever both by number of planes and total value from a Middle Eastern airline. It surpasses flydubai’s previous record of 75 MAX planes and 11 Next-Generation 737-800s, an order signed at the 2013 Dubai Airshow. flydubai reports that the planes will bring its number of planes on order to 320.
Though most of the planes will be 737 MAX 8s and MAX 9s, over 50 of the planes will be MAX10s, the newest and largest member of the 737 MAX family. Boeing reports that the MAX 10 will have the lowest seat-mile cost of any single-aisle plane ever produced.
“We are extremely honored that flydubai has selected to be an all-Boeing operator for many years to come. This record-breaking agreement builds on our strong partnership with flydubai and the other leading carriers of this region,” said Kevin McAllister, President and CEO of Boeing Commercial Airplanes. “With flydubai’s proven business model and ambitious growth plans, we look forward to hundreds of flydubai 737 MAXs connecting Dubai with the rest of the world.”
“We welcome the continuation of our long partnership with Boeing. Their airplanes have provided a foundation for the success of our business model, providing us with the operational flexibility and range to build a network of 95 destinations in 44 countries,” said His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of flydubai. “Understanding the demand for travel across our network, our innovative approach to our cabin design and developing a product unique to our market has allowed us to exceed our passengers’ expectations in their flying experience.”
Ghaith Al Ghaith, Chief Executive Officer, flydubai added: “Today marks the next chapter in flydubai’s success story. Since we launched in 2009, flydubai has opened up 67 previously underserved markets serving our passengers across the region. We ordered this aircraft model as it has given us the versatility and flexibility to carry 44 million passengers since our first flight.”
“Today’s aircraft order underlines the success of flydubai’s founding vision helping to strengthen trade and tourism links across its network and has contributed to the enhanced connectivity of Dubai’s aviation hub,” said Sheikh Ahmed.
Delivery of the planes will begin in 2019 and spread across 10 years, with some planes delivered ahead of the 2013 order. Given the size of the order, flydubai will probably get a discount off of the list price of the planes.
The 737 MAX is the fastest-selling plane in Boeing’s history. It has more than 4,000 orders from 92 customers. Flydubai was the world’s first airline to introduce the Boeing Sky Interior in service.
flydubai wasn’t the only Middle Eastern airline to place a large order with Boeing at the Dubai Airshow. Emirates Airlines placed an order for 40 B787-10 planes, choosing the Boeing jets over Airbus A380s.
