Every day, airlines around the world launch new routes, some with little fanfare, others with great fanfare. Regardless of their status, we collect the most interesting routes announced each week, and share them with you here.

Routes Announced This Week (May 22nd – May 28th)

Air India will begin flights to Stockholm (pictured) thrice-weekly starting at the end of this summer.

Air India: Delhi – Stockholm

Starting August 16th, 2017, Air India will begin operations between Delhi and Stockholm, operated by its Boeing 787-8 aircraft. The route was first announced as a destination by Air India’s CEO on social media, before being confirmed by the airline and Arlanda Airport this week. Flights will operate three times a week, and passengers traveling to Stockholm can connect onto points in Europe through Air India’s Star Alliance partner SAS.

By the end of this year, Alaska will join the list of carriers flying passengers from the U.S. to Mexico City, flying four times a day between the Mexican capital and destinations in California.

Alaska: Los Angeles / San Diego / San Francisco – Mexico City

Alaska Airlines will begin operations to Mexico City starting in August, after it gained DOT approval earlier this year. Flights will begin from Los Angeles and San Francisco on August 8th, 2017, while a second daily flight from Los Angeles and flights from San Diego will start on November 6th, 2017 (marked with asterisk* on schedule below). Flights starting in August will be operated by Boeing 737-800 aircraft, while flights starting in November will be operated by Skywest Embraer E175 aircraft.

Delta will begin operating flights between New York City and St. Kitts starting December 23rd, 2017.

Delta: New York JFK – St. Kitts

Starting December 23rd, 2017, and throughout the Winter 2017-18 season, Delta will operate Saturday flights between New York JFK and the Caribbean destination of St. Kitts. Flights will be operated with Boeing 757-200 aircraft, and Delta’s flights will compete against flights operated by American from New York JFK and by United from Newark.

Japan Airlines: Tokyo Narita – Kona

Resuming service after a seven year hiatus, Japan Airlines filed for service between Tokyo Narita and Kona, Hawaii starting September 15th, 2017. Flights stopped in 2010, when Japan Airlines operated flights under its JALWays brand. Flights will operate daily with Boeing 767 aircraft, and will compete with Hawaiian Airlines’ thrice-weekly flights to Tokyo Haneda.

Known for the multitude of resorts nearby, Cancun will get additional flights to the US on Spirit starting this fall.

Spirit: Baltimore-Washington/Chicago O’Hare – Cancun

Spirit announced new service to Cancun this week, with flights from Baltimore/Washington and Chicago O’Hare starting November 9th, 2017. Flights will operate daily from both destinations, using Airbus A319 aircraft. Spirit will compete in the Chicago market with American, Frontier, Southwest and United, and will compete in the Baltimore market with Southwest.

Both famous for their biodiversity and statuses as a vacation destination, Fort Lauderdale will get flights to Punta Cana and San Jose, CR starting in November on Southwest.

Southwest: Fort Lauderdale – Punta Cana/San Jose, CR

Among other routes announced this week, Southwest Airlines announced that it will begin flights between Fort Lauderdale, Punta Cana and San Jose, Costa Rica starting November 5th, 2017. Flights will operate daily using Boeing 737-700 aircraft, and Southwest’s flights will compete against JetBlue and Spirit.
