Santa Monica, California-based Surf Air has recently announced its’ plans to fly intra-European flights starting in May. The airline is a subscription-based carrier that offers “unlimited flights” for a fixed monthly fee.
The new expansion coined “Surf Air Europe” will connect the cities of London, England and Zurich, Switzerland on weekdays, and London to Ibiza, Spain on weekends. The new subscription model will cost 1,750 pounds (USD $2,180) per month, which will give the customer unlimited travel.
Surf Air Europe Chief Executive Simon Talling-Smith mentioned the cities of Cannes, France, Munich, Germany, and Milan, Italy as routes that will be connected in the near future.
The new airline will be an overseas counterpart of Surf Air, a charter subscription-based carrier that operates flights from it’s primary bases in Burbank, Hawthorne, San Carlos, and Carlsbad, all in California. This company has exploded in size since it’s launch in early 2013, now with over 3,000 members and 200 jobs created. Surf Air operates a fleet of 12 Swiss-made Pilatus PC-12NG aircraft, with 45 examples on order. These small aircraft can fly up to 8 passengers on missions up to 3,400 km. (1,830 nm)
Combining the profits of the European and Californian operations, the airline expects $10 million in revenue this year.
The new European flights are expected to pick off some select customers that currently fly between Zurich and London paying for business and first class seats, which are generally customers with a higher budget. On Swiss International Airlines and British Airways, it can cost 500 pounds round trip between London and Zurich in business class, which compares to 1,750 pounds per month on Surf Air, with unlimited flights. In order to manage the subscription service for it’s European flights, tech firm Zuora will control the operations and revenues.
Surf Air has previously stated that the airline plans on ordering 50 Cessna Citation CJ4 aircraft, which are rumored to be used on flights to multiple European cities such as Luxembourg, Reims, Hamburg, Venice, Glasgow, Leipzig, and Brussels.
Exciting times are ahead for the Surf Air company!
