Earlier this week, United Airlines continued it’s long-haul route announcement bonanza with the addition of new flights from some of it’s largest hubs to two new destinations in Europe.

Starting next summer, United will commence Summer-seasonal service to four popular European tourist spots including Reykjavik, Iceland; Porto, Portugal; Edinburgh, Scotland; and Zurich, Switzerland.

Reykjavik and Porto are the only new destinations that were part of the announcement, but they certainly weren’t unexpected as tourism in Iceland has been multiplying each year for the last five years or so, and the demand for travelers to Portugal has skyrocketed, especially in the Summer months.

The four flights will be operating under the following schedules:

Newark-Liberty, NJ (EWR) to Porto, Portugal (OPO)

UA144 Newark 9:45 p.m. departure -> Porto 9:50 a.m. arrival (+1)  7 hours 5 minutes  Boeing 757-200

UA145 Porto 12:35 p.m. departure -> Newark 1:35 p.m. arrival  8 hours  Boeing 757-200

Newark-Liberty, NJ (EWR) to Reykjavik, Iceland (KEF)

UA138 Newark 10:30 p.m. departure -> Reykjavik 8:10 a.m. arrival (+1)  5 hours 40 minutes  Boeing 757-200

UA139 Reykjavik 11:55 a.m. departure -> Newark 2:05 p.m. arrival  6 hours 10 minutes  Boeing 757-200

San Francisco, CA (SFO) to Zurich, Switzerland (ZRH)

UA44 San Francisco 2:10 p.m. departure -> Zurich 10:10 a.m. arrival (+1)  11 hours  Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner

UA45 Zurich 9:50 a.m. departure -> San Francisco 12:40 p.m. arrival  11 hours 50 minutes  Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner

Washington/Dulles, VA (IAD) to Edinburgh, Scotland (EDI)

UA146 Washington/Dulles 10:10 p.m. departure -> Edinburgh 10:25 a.m. arrival (+1)  7 hours 15 minutes Boeing 757-200

UA147 Edinburgh 12:40 p.m. departure -> Washington/Dulles 3:40 p.m. arrival  8 hours  Boeing 757-200

United’s Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner will operate its new San Francisco-Zurich route. The aircraft operates flights to Xi’an, Tokyo, Tel Aviv, Chengdu, and Paris, as well.

“As we continue growing our global route network we are offering more choice and convenience to travel internationally, something our customers have told us they want,” said Patrick Quayle, United’s vice president of International Network. “The new seasonal summer flights offer customers even more opportunities to plan summer travel to four of Europe’s most beautiful cities.”

The additions of these new routes comes shortly after multiple other long-haul routes were announced by the airline in recent months, such as the announcement of new Houston-Sydney, Australia service last week, Los Angeles-Singapore back in the Spring, and Newark and Buenos Aires, Argentina back in February. Needless to say, United is becoming an obvious frontrunner for being the American airline with the best European network, and many of these routes wouldn’t be possible without fellow Star Alliance member airlines’ codesharing with UA on many intra-Europe service.

Along with the flights that are new to United’s already huge European network, the airline will extend it’s service between some of its hubs and Edinburgh, Dublin, Munich, and Lisbon, by making flights available for booking earlier and extending the Summer seasonal flights further into Fall. The following routes will be affected:

Daily service between Chicago and Edinburgh and between San Francisco and Munich will begin May 4th, 2018, and end October 26th, 2017.

Seasonal service between Chicago and Dublin and between Washington/Dulles and Lisbon will begin April 9th, 2018, and end October 26th, 2018.
