Every day, airlines around the world launch new routes, some with little fanfare, others with great fanfare. Regardless of their status, we collect the most interesting routes announced each week, and share them with you here.

Routes Announced This Week (May 15th – May 21st)

Delta’s new service between New York and Rio de Janerio will link the two cities daily, starting this winter.

Delta: New York City – Rio de Janeiro

Delta opened reservations for its previously announced service from New York JFK to Rio de Janeiro, starting December 21st, 2017 (New York Departure). Flights will operate once daily, and are timed to connect with connections on the New York side. Delta’s Boeing 767-400ER aircraft will operate these flights.

Israeli tourists will get a non-stop flight to Florida for the first time in nine years, starting this summer.

El Al: Miami – Tel Aviv

Resuming service after a nine-year hiatus, El Al will return to Miami with three flights a week to Tel Aviv, starting November 1st, 2017. Flights will be operated by El Al’s Boeing 777-200ER aircraft, and will be the only flights linking the Southeast to Israel with a non-stop flight.

Famous for its open spaces and its pandas, Chengdu will get a direct link to the African continent with Ethiopian Airlines’ new service starting this June.

Ethiopian Airlines: Addis Ababa – Chengdu

Although this route has been in the works for some time, the schedule for launch has just been confirmed by the airline, with a one-off flight on May 22nd being followed up by regular flights starting June 2nd, 2017 (Addis Ababa Departure). Flights between Addis Ababa will be operated three times weekly by Ethiopian Airlines’ Boeing 787-8 Dreamliner aircraft, and are timed to connect to services in Chengdu by Ethopian’s Star Alliance partners Air China and Sichuan Airlines.

Famous for its colonial architecture and status as the most populated city in India, Mumbai will be getting service from KLM once again for the first time in 16 years.

KLM: Amsterdam – Mumbai

KLM will be resuming service to Mumbai after a 16 year hiatus in service, flying the route three times a week using KLM’s newest Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner aircraft. These flights will accompany Skyteam partner Jet Airways’ daily flights to Mumbai, and are timed for passengers to make connections through Amsterdam to destinations throughout Europe and North America. This new service was featured in an article earlier this week, which you can read here.

Tel Aviv will be getting low-cost, transatlantic links with WOW Air’s new service via. its hub in Reykjavík.

WOW Air: Reykjavík – Tel Aviv

Bringing low-cost, transatlantic travel to Israel, WOW Air announced the launch of service between its Reykjavík hub and Tel Aviv in Israel starting on September 12th, 2017. Flights will operate four times a week, with Airbus A321 aircraft. This route was also featured in an article earlier this week, which you can read here. Connections from North America to Israel include an approximately 13 hour layover in Reykjavík, while connections from Israel to North America include an approximately 2 hour layover in Reykjavík, making this an attractive option to travelers wishing to visit two countries in one trip.
