United Airlines announced on Thursday that it will launch a new nonstop flight between Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) and Tel Aviv Ben Gurion International Airport (TLV) next year.

The route, which will first be flown on May 22, 2019, is subject to government approval. United will be the first US carrier to connect the two cities.

The service will be operated by Boeing 777-200ER aircraft.

“As we begin celebrating 20 years of service in Israel, we want to thank our customers and employees who have helped make United the top U.S. airline serving Israel,” said Patrick Quayle, United’s vice president of International Network. “We thank the Israeli government for its ongoing support and partnership. We look forward to continuing to serve Israel with this new service for our customers traveling between the U.S. capital and one of the most advanced science and technology sectors in the world.”

“We are thrilled to welcome another United Airlines flight to Israel from the United States,” said Yariv Levin, Israel’s Minister of Tourism. “Today’s announcement is a wonderful way to celebrate United’s 20 year history in Israel and opens many more opportunities for both countries to continue to build strong relationships while growing business and expanding tourism.”

The outbound flight, United UA72, will depart from Washington Dulles at 22:30 on Wednesdays. Fridays, and Sundays. It will land in Tel Aviv at 16:30 (+1 day). The return flight, UA73, will leave Tel Aviv at 00:20 on Tuesdays, Fridays, and Sundays; it will arrive in Washington, DC at 5:50 that morning.

The new route is essential to business development in the region. Virginia’s Fairfax County Economic Development Authority has revealed over 1,000 jobs in the area over the past year, many of which have ties to Israeli businesses. A new connection to Tel Aviv will give the region easier access to Israel, which could ease business transactions and make communication between American and Israeli businesses easy.

United offers more nonstop service between the United States and Tel Aviv than any other US airline. United currently flies twice daily service to Tel Aviv from Newark and a daily service between San Francisco and Tel Aviv. The new connection to Dulles will offer passengers convenient connections to over 70 destinations in the United States, such as Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Cleveland, Houston, Dallas, and Miami.

United offers over 260 daily flights out of Washington Dulles, about 30 of which are to international destinations.

United started flying to Tel Aviv in 1999 with its Newark service. Originally served daily, the frequency was increased to twice daily in 2004. United’s flight between San Francisco and Tel Aviv made it the first US carrier to connect Israel with the US west coast.
