A powerful winter storm bringing up to 18 inches of snow and high winds to the Twin Cities has caused major flight disruptions at Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport (MSP), with more than 500 cancellations over the weekend and dozens more delayed, stranding hundreds of passengers.

Delta Air Lines, the airport’s primary hub operator, has borne the brunt of the disruptions, canceling hundreds of flights. Other carriers including American Airlines, Southwest Airlines, Sun Country Airlines, United Airlines, SkyWest Airlines and Endeavor Air have also issued proactive cancellations and travel waivers.

Scale of Disruptions

As of Saturday morning, over 500 flights had been canceled at MSP since the storm’s onset on March 14. Live airport data on Sunday shows 68 arrivals and 56 departures canceled, alongside 84 delayed arrivals and 87 delayed departures. Delta led with 38 canceled arrivals, followed by Sun Country (10), American (6) and Southwest (4).

Earlier reports noted 105 cancellations and 89 delays, primarily affecting Delta (64 cancels, 42 delays), SkyWest (11/16) and others.

Storm Timeline and Conditions

The disruptions stem from a major winter system forecast through March 16, with a Blizzard Warning in effect through Monday. Snowfall of 12-18 inches is expected in the Twin Cities, accompanied by wind gusts up to 45 mph creating blizzard conditions, per FOX 9 live updates. Cancellations ramped up preemptively: 35 departures and 31 arrivals by 5:40 a.m. on March 14, escalating to 66 arrivals and 55 departures by 7:30 p.m.

Delta cancels flights ahead of winter weather in Midwest: “The safety of Delta customers and our people remains first and foremost as we closely monitor forecasts to determine necessary adjustments to flight schedules.”
