Southwest Airlines Discontinuing Service at Chicago O’Hare (ORD) and Washington Dulles (IAD) Airports Effective June 4, 2026

March 13, 2026 — Southwest Airlines announced it is discontinuing service at Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) and Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) effective June 4, 2026, ending all flights to, from or through the airports as part of ongoing network refinement efforts to improve efficiency and profitability. The decision affects dozens of daily flights across 15 markets from ORD and shifts focus to Chicago Midway (MDW), Baltimore/Washington International (BWI) and Reagan National (DCA).

Southwest began ORD service in 2021 as a post-COVID experiment, taking advantage of available gates amid reduced competition, but cited ongoing operational challenges including congestion. The carrier operates up to 244 daily departures at MDW, its Chicago base since 1985, where all ORD markets will continue without reduction. IAD service, launched in 2006, will consolidate at nearby BWI and DCA.

“As part of Southwest’s ongoing efforts to refine its network, the company will discontinue service to Chicago O’Hare (ORD) and Washington Dulles (IAD), effective June 4. These changes do not represent any significant changes in flight availability for these cities, as we will continue our robust service at Chicago Midway (MDW), Baltimore Washington International (BWI), and Washington Reagan National (DCA).”
