Southwest Airlines to End Service at Chicago O’Hare and Washington Dulles Airports in June 2026

March 17, 2026 — Dallas, Texas Southwest Airlines announced it will cease all flights to, from, and through Chicago O’Hare International Airport (ORD) and Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) effective June 4, 2026, citing operational challenges and network refinement efforts. The decision shifts focus to nearby hubs Chicago Midway (MDW), Baltimore/Washington International (BWI), and Reagan National (DCA).

The carrier, which began limited service at O’Hare in 2021 as a post-pandemic experiment and at Dulles in 2006, described operations at both airports as challenging due to congestion, high costs, gate fees, and intense competition from airlines like United and American.

“Southwest Airlines will no longer operate service to, from, or through Chicago/O’Hare, IL (ORD) and Washington/Dulles, DC (IAD) beginning June 4, 2026,” the carrier stated in its alert.

Reasons for the Decision

Southwest emphasized greater efficiency at its established bases. “Operating at O’Hare has proven difficult, while its long-established presence at Midway provides stronger connectivity and efficiency,” the airline said. Midway already handles over 90% of Southwest’s Chicago passengers and more than 6,000 monthly flights to over 80 destinations, absorbing the 15 markets previously served from O’Hare.

In the Washington area, Southwest remains the largest carrier by passengers, offering up to 271 daily departures to 79 destinations from BWI and DCA combined. Dulles service was minimal, with just 93 scheduled flights this month, including twice-daily to Denver and once-daily to Phoenix, according to Business Insider.

Passenger Impacts and Options

Passengers with bookings to or from ORD or IAD on or after June 4 will be affected. Southwest assured no significant reduction in service availability, with routes reallocated to alternative airports. Rebooking and refunds are available through the airline’s travel advisory page, as reported by CBS News Chicago.

Employee Considerations and Broader Context

Frontline employees at ORD and IAD can bid for positions at other Southwest locations, including Midway. The move aligns with Southwest’s point-to-point model favoring secondary airports, as noted by Business Travel News.
